2017 Aratas “Los Carneros” Chardonnay – Close Out Special
2017 Aratas Los Carneros “Old Wente” Chardonnay.
The 2017 vintage is produced from “old Wente” Chardonnay clone planted to vine in the cool AVA of Carneros at the southern end of the Napa Valley.
As one of the most sought after Chardonnay clones known for producing liquid gold, this vineyard is planted in tight rows oriented east to west to capture every ray of sunshine while protecting it from burn during the mid day heat.
This year marked the “official” end of the 7 year drought. While the vineyard is typically dry farmed, its water tolerance results in high quality fruit with a dense flavor structure. Harvest occured on Sept 8, 2017 just days before a concerning heat spike and high winds kicked off the fire of the century. The wine was safely in the tank while Matt and the team hunkered down to worked ’round the clock as the mayhem burning acres of land at our doorstep ripped fear across the valley. It was a terrifying end to such a perfect growing season and looking back; given how lucky we were, makes the wine tastes all the better.
From juice to wine…
The wine went thru 100% malolactic fermentation and sur lie aged for one year in (50% new) Taransaud French oak barrels. Matt painstakingly stirred the wine every two weeks or so to give it its rich creamy texture. Its labor a intensive treatment but the end result gives a wine dimension, roundness and complexity.
